Laboratory Technician

Overview

We are Vatic, a dynamic company aiming to make healthcare more proactive, enabling people to make informed decisions about their health. Our ambition is to become a leading digital health business, helping people to diagnose all acute diseases. We have already developed a diagnostics tool using the lateral flow platform for COVID-19. Significantly, this test is less invasive, highly accurate and focuses on live cases of transmissible virus. We are now looking for a Laboratory Technician who will perform very critical work with senior colleagues supporting the R&D programme in the COVID-19 space and beyond. This is a hands-on practical that will include validation of existing and development of new assays. Responsibilities

  • Implement and utilise a range of methods, assay techniques in assay development.
  • Assemble prototypes of devices and perform tests with high precision.
  • Conduct analysis of biomolecules and nanoparticles via physiochemical methods, binding affinity, kinetic assays, particle size and number characterisation.
  • Troubleshoot and monitor technical performance issues of diagnostics assays via QC.
  • Perform Instrument Qualification (IQ/OQ/PQ) for laboratory instrumentation.
  • Plan and perform laboratory maintenance and servicing schedules to follow industry standards and safety regulations for handling and disposing of test samples and chemicals.

Experience

  • Basic scientific knowledge of nanomaterials/nanoparticles and biomacromolecules such as proteins or RNA/DNA.
  • High confidence with manual handling of components of devices, to fabricate and assemble different types of prototypes of medical devices with high precision.
  • Experience with liquid handling systems (pipettes, dispensers, automated liquid handling instrumentation). Ability to set up instrumentation to dispense liquids consistently on prototypes of devices.
  • Strong attention to detail and a high level of organisation.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, in particular reporting data in clearly and systematically
  • Pro-active attitude and willingness to grow and develop in the role.

Desired skills and qualities

  • BSc or MSc in a scientific subject, or 1+ years of experience in a research lab or industry.
  • Experience working with viruses or bacteria in a Containment Level 2 lab.
  • Experience with SARS-CoV2 vaccine.
  • Experience working with expression and analysis of SARS-CoV2 proteins.
  • Experience with clinical validation of diagnostic assays.
  • Understanding of proteins, their synthesis, purification and characterisation using simple methods (UV-Vis, SEC, SDS page, functional assays), and/or practical experience with related instrumentation IQ/OQ.
  • Understanding principles of analysis of nanoparticles and liquid dispersions, and/or practical experience with related instrumentation IQ/OQ (DLS, zeta potential, particle quantification/count, UV-Vis) and dispersion stability (sedimentation/coagulation/flocculation, use of surfactants, other stabilisation methods).
  • Experience working within a lab with ISO 13485 or ISO 9001 certification and an awareness of related Quality Management systems.
  • Experience in preparing laboratory health and safety documentation.

Logistics:

Location: The laboratory is based in Oxford and successful candidates would be expected to spend their time in the lab.
